According to the company's announcement on Saturday, Meta-owned WhatsApp banned a record-breaking over 45 lakh bad accounts in India during the month of February in accordance with the new IT Regulations 2021.

According to WhatsApp's monthly compliance report, between February 1 and February 28, "4,597,400 WhatsApp accounts were banned, and 1,298,000 of these accounts were proactively removed, before any reports from users."

The most widely used messaging app, which has around 500 million users nationwide, got 2,804 complaint complaints, a new high, in February. Of those, 504 were "acted upon."

According to a company spokeswoman, "This user-safety report provides details about the user complaints received and the appropriate action taken by WhatsApp, as well as WhatsApp's own preventive measures to combat abuse on our platform."

"We will continue with transparency to our work and disclose information about our efforts in future reports," the spokeswoman stated.

However, the Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC), which will look into their concerns on content and other issues, was recently established by Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar in an effort to empower millions of Indian social media users.

The recently established body will examine user appeals against decisions made by social media platforms as part of an effort to improve the nation's digital laws and rein in Big Tech giants.

As required by the recently updated IT Regulations, 2021, the IT Ministry issued a notification last month directing the creation of three GACs.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT has announced several modifications intended to defend the rights of "Digital Nagriks" as part of a significant drive towards an open, safe, trusted, and accountable Internet.
